This can happen if your monitor is set to use 256 colors. If possible,
you should change to 16-bit color (thousands of colors)
or more colors if available.
To do this on Windows 95,98,ME, NT, or 2000, go to the
Start menu, then Settings, Control Panel, Display, Settings,
and then change the Color Palette to "High Color (16 bit). or Highest
(32 bit)"
Next, go to Start, then Control Panel, Display, Settings, Advanced, then Performance. Once here, slow down the
Hardware Acceleration setting (slide switch to the left).
Also, if you uncheck "Show Window Contents While Dragging" from the last tab of the Display Control Panel,
this may help some drawing problems.
